Q & HAY - Tummy Gummies
For today’s edition of Q & HAY, we are sharing some of the top Tummy Gummies questions we receive. Are they like TUMS?
Tummy Gummies are made with calcium carbonate and magnesium oxide (similarly to TUMS), which begin buffering acid on contact. However, the amount of active ingredient is designed for horses and the consistency and taste (carrot and/or peppermint) are preferred.
How long are they effective?
The gummies start neutralizing acid on contact and reach peak buffering capacity within 15 minutes. When feeding 4 at a time the peak buffering effects will last approximately 45 minutes. It’s perfectly safe to feed additional gummies after that time to extend it.
Are they like Gastrogard?
Tummy Gummies are quite different from Gastrogard. Gastrogard is a proton pump inhibitor that eliminates the production of acid. Tummy Gummies are antacids that buffer pH for short periods of time when horses are at risk for gastric upset, but it allows them to continue producing acid so that they can digest their feed and absorb nutrients.
When do I give them?
Most people like to feed them daily while the horses are being tacked up...or before any stressful situation like a show, trailering, the farrier, etc.
Are they safe for metabolic horses?
Yes! The gummies are extremely low in sugar and have approximately 4 grams per serving as compared to a typical peppermint that has between 12-24g of sugar.
Show safe?
Yes! All of our products are lab tested and horse show safe.
How do they compare to other equine antacids?
Normal antacids can be inconvenient and difficult to feed because they are scheduled around meal times, and are often found at the bottom of the bucket having been skillfully avoided. Not only are Tummy Gummies the perfect ringside companion (they can be fed from the bottle or put in your pocket), but they make delicious and healthy treats that can be fed anytime and anywhere.
How do they compare to human gummies?
Unlike human gummies that are made with gelatin, sugar and corn syrup, Tummy Gummies are vegan and formulated to be safe and effective specifically for horses.
